Vateria indica – White Dammar
White Dammar is an aromatic resin primarily produced by trees in the Dipterocarpaceae family, native to Southeastern Asia. The most commercially significant genera include Hopea, Shorea, and Balanocarpus. This resin is light in color with a milky appearance and emits a delicate, lemony fragrance when burned.
In the Malaysian language, the word “Damar” means light, referring to the way the resin catches and reflects light. It is also associated with an uplifting and ethereal quality. Traditionally, White Dammar has been valued for its ability to create a bright and uplifting atmosphere, often used in various cultural and spiritual practices.
Characteristics of White Dammar:
- Fragrance: Fresh, sweet, and balsamic
- Symbolism: Associated with clarity, positivity, and illumination
How to Burn White Dammar Resin:
- Use tongs to hold a charcoal disc and light it with a match or lighter for about 20 seconds until it begins to self-ignite.
- Place the lit charcoal in a heat-resistant bowl or incense burner filled with sand or dirt.
- Allow the charcoal to warm for a few minutes until the edges turn gray.
- Add a small amount of White Dammar resin on top of the charcoal. As it heats, the resin will release its aromatic scent through the rising smoke.
- For a continuous burn, periodically add more resin as needed.
